Adhaar: From Election ID to Information Technology
People information is the wealth of nation!
India second huge nation in the world which is just crossed 1.3 billion in population. More awareness about the data across the world creating more importance to the people databases like Adhaar. Brazil, Ghana, Indonesia, Malaysia also worked on the projects like this. The rapid evolution of Information technology might force other nations to do similar projects across the world.
Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) was established on 28th January 2019 as an attached office of the Planning Commission (now its NITI Ayog). In 2015, the government attached to the department of Electronics and information technology (DeitY). The main aim is to provide technologically advanced identity to Indian citizens which help to verify fake Identity.
Nandan Nilakeni who is the co-founder of Infosys was appointed as the head of the project who launched the name and brand logo of "Adhaar" in May 2010. Even though our prime minister announced benefit transfer scheme aiming to eliminate the corruption in government beneficiary schemes, they failed to establish further successfully.
I think "We must thank Nilakeni who explained the significance of Adhaar to Narendra Modi and Arun Jaitley and became successful in giving unique identities to over 95% of Indians. Now with Jan-Dhan and Aadhaar, the government is successful in transferring over 80,000 crore rupees directly to the people of India without leakage"
Adhaar not only contains our regular details like Full name, Date of birth and place but it also contains our three unique identities i.e thumb impression, iris and facial photographs which made them so advanced and perfect ID in the world.
Now it becomes a focal point in the world. The report from world bank in 2016 with "Digital dividends" title stated Adhaar would save $11 billion annually if it is applied to social programs and welfare distribution. Paul Romer, world bank chief described it as "the most sophisticated ID program in the world".
Stephen Hawking calls for World government to face artificial intelligence(AI) technology. They thought AI is more dangerous than nuclear explosives. If we need to have a world government first thing we must have is the database of people around the globe. Adhaar thus has huge importance and significance.
Now Adhaar made compulsory for most of the departments in the government and it's started rule as best ID proof in other private organizations as well. From purchasing SIM cards to opening bank accounts Adhaar made it easy.
But somewhere it appears Adhaar failed to keep its privacy. Leakage of information in various websites are the proofs. Still, we need a better data securing system to lock the ID's.
In the age of artificial intelligence, this needs the best solutions. Recently, lacs of Adhaar cards have been proved fake and it is locked from the government.
If we look into its significance
1. It made beneficiaries of government schemes happy avoiding corruption
2. It stands as the better ID proof in any way
3. It helped in cashless transactions and made it more easy with BHIM app or UPI payment system
4. It will play major role in cashless economy
5. It helps to avoid fake IDs
6. Linking to PAN helps to avoid fake PAN numbers which result in economic development
