Quantum Computers : Where India Stands?

Buzzing everywhere, Quantum computers becoming viral news!

Every new innovation brings curiosity, fear, doubts and happiness. Same feelings with the quantum computers as well. The rise of quantum computers leads to high-level computing through which the processing information will be super fast!.

The basic computing system is to collect the information and processing it as we want it. The current system of computing, achieving it with bytes and logic gates. Loading one's and zero's as information in bytes and using gates like AND, OR, NOR, XOR, XAND, NAND etc to showcase the information.

Yuri Ivanovitch Manin a Russian, who is famous for his work on algebraic geometry and Diophantine geometry wrote a book called Computable and Uncomputable contains the first note on quantum computers. Even though it happened in the 1980s period it got no importance at that time as people convinced with the technologies at that time.

The classical computer has the memory made of bits where each bit represented by zero and one combinations. The basic quantum bit (Qubit) can represent one or zero super positions.  Similarly, it can represent 2 to the power n states (2^n), where n is the number of Qubits.

Examples
A pair of qubits can represent 4 states.
3 qubits can represent 2x2x2 = 2^3 = 8 states
4 Qubits can represent 2x2x2x2 = 2^4 = 16 states

As the data awareness risen to its peak, now we definitely need smart computing system to achieve a better Artificial Intelligence machine. Qubit is a two-state quantum mechanical system like a photon's polarization. Here two states are vertical and horizontal polarization. Similarly, we have Electrons spin, Nucleus spin, Atomic spin etc to represent as qubits.

D WAVE: First ever Quantum computer creator

D-Wave the first ever company which created the quantum computer which is located in Canada. It has 140 patents from U.S and being used by world class organizations like Google, NASA, USC and USRA etc. It aims to achieve Quantum computers a reality.

Timeline and Achievements
2010 - First ever computer
2013 - 512 qubits system
2015 - 1000 qubits system
2017 - 2000 qubits system with control features

Google defines "Quantum computing is the design of hardware and software that replaces Boolean logic by quantum law at the algorithmic level". Google spent over 15 million dollars in the Quantum computers project. It is working hard from 2013 to achieve the project.

Other giants like Intel, Alibaba ( Aliyun), HP, IBM etc also in the race. There are more companies from Canada. USA, Japan, UK, Australia and China are also participating.

Where India Stands?

Dr. Rajamani Vijayaraghavan holds P.hD from Yale University in Applied Physics. At present, he is working with Tata institute of fundamental research, Mumbai. They worked on Implementation of pairwise longitudinal coupling in a three-qubit superconducting circuit.

In his website, he says about research as "The Quantum Measurement and Control Laboratory (QuMaC) at TIFR primarily investigates quantum phenomena in superconducting circuits. These nanofabricated electrical circuits are engineered to behave as artificial atoms with quantized energy levels. Two of those levels can form a quantum bit (qubit) and used to store and process information. With such qubits, one can build powerful computing machines capable of providing exponential speed up for certain mathematical problems. Our lab aims to tackle the fundamental challenges in building and controlling such quantum systems."
